Startup Roots Singapore searches for second batch of fellows

by Joash Wee

Startup Roots Singapore is a 10-week program started by Derrick Ko, Zaizhuang Cheng and James Chan in 2011. The goal of the program is to show some of the brightest students in local universities that startups are a viable and exciting career path. Last year, the program accepted six students, called fellows, and placed them in companies such as Viki, Chalkboard, PlayMoolah, Anideo and Docubuzz.

The second Startup Roots Singapore is now accepting fellow applications and also startups who are looking for interns. Currently, startups that are already committed to the program are  Viki, ImpulseFlyer, Wikinvest, and Playmoolah. Here are what some of last year’s fellows had to say about the program.

“StartupRoots opens doors to not only the local startup community, but more importantly, to the realities of growing a startup. Working closely alongside with founders, I got to experiment under much market uncertainties, to forgo previous sunk costs incurred, and make the call for necessary changes. The term – Pivoting – no longer becomes just a buzzword,” commented Sharon Lourdes Paul, who interned at Docubuzz. View Sharon’s program wrap-up slides here.

“Through working at Chalkboard, I was given a chance to do a wide variety of things, from scaling systems, to working with the business people to come up with the product, to even sitting in meetings with major partners. StartupRootsSG has shown me how fulfilling working in a startup can be,” said Laurence Putra Franslay, who interned at Chalkboard. View Laurence’s program wrap-up slides here.
