Calling all game lovers,  here’s an app that will get you putting your android explorer hat on (see image on the left) and discover the world of free and new android game apps.

Applorer, the brainchild of local company, Stream Media, is a free mobile app that aggregates and keeps users updated with the latest android game apps in the marketplace. With over 400,000 apps already uploaded onto the Android Market, finding and being discoverable is a problem for both consumers and developers. Stream Media did a careful research and analysis on the situation and realized that the marketplace’s ‘Top Apps’ list are not very well updated. New and exciting game apps on the market will not gain as much visibility and hence, not downloaded. Applorer was thus created to make discovering new and cool apps easy.

Surprise Me!

Too spoilt for choices from the array of apps available? First checkout the ‘Top Free” tab that features a list of popular apps and thus, recommended apps in applorer.  Still undecided? Here’s where things gets fun! Select ‘Surprise Me!’ and wait for the app to randomly generate a game app. The anticipation of such surprises never fail to get gamers excited!

Organized layout

The overall layout of the app is clean and neat. Apps are organized into new ones under the ‘New games’ tab, popular ones under the ‘Top Free’ tab and further categorized into different game types: arcade & action, brain & puzzle, sports and many more under ‘Categories’. A search engine is also built into the app to make finding apps easy.

When users find a good game app, they can choose to either download or bookmark it for referencing later. The downloaded or bookmarked app will then be reflected in the user’s ‘My games’ tab.

Free upgrade to Applorer Gamebox

A free upgrade to Applorer Gamebox featuring more known paid game apps like Sims 3 and bejeweled is available in-app. Both versions are more or less similar except for the additional ‘Paid games’ tab that is only available in the upgraded version.

For premium games, users do not have to use their credit card to pay. Using Stream Media’s Movend in-app payment solution, users can purchase using paypal, cherry credits, SMS billing and google checkout (coming soon).

What I think about Applorer

Overall, it’s a pretty cool app (especially for game addicts) for discovering new, cool and most importantly, free game apps that would otherwise be invisible in the market.  The only disappointment though is that games are displayed in a list. There are many games featured in the app. Thus, displaying them in a long list will mean users have to keep scrolling down to view more games. As with most users, scrolling probably ends at the first 10-15 apps. This kind of defeats the purpose of the app’s purpose of making new and interesting apps easily discoverable.

Perhaps, the app can relook into it’s design or limit the number of apps in each tab to 10. In the latter, this helps to keep apps fresh and new by constantly updating the 10 apps to be featured. This will get people coming back to discover more apps.

A suggestion for Applorer will be having a ‘shake’ function to surprise users with a random game instead or in addition to the selection button; adding a fun aspect to it.  I would recommend users to go for the free upgrade to Applorer gamebox after downloading Applorer to get a full list of free and premium games.
