Singapore’s Super Incubator for Startups

by Sneha Menon

In yet another effort to boost the Singapore startup ecosystem, Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA) is launching ‘Superincubator,’ a 16,000 sqm physical space for startups, incubators and service providers.

The building will be located at Ayer Rajah Crescent near Buona Vista MRT and is part of a broader initiative by MDA known as the Mediapolis Phase Zero, which aims to accelerate the development of next-generation consumer applications.

The super incubator aims to provide affordable space for startups and to bring major players in the Interactive Digital Media sector under one roof to spur collaboration activities. The building will have seven floors with the size of typical unit size ranging from 90 – 95 sqm.

Tenants are expected to do their own interiors including air conditioning, internet connection, lighting and finishing of walls.

On an average, the rental charges will be S$16 per sqm.

NUS Enterprise and Interactive Digital Media Program Office are the major players involved in the building of this incubator.

The space will be available from Jan 2011 to Dec 2013 and startups can enjoy 3-months rent free if they sign up for this space before 31 Dec 2010.

That picture is *very* much an artists impression of the area near Biopolis! It often seems a little more barren humanity-wise.

    Errm…WHAT!?

    this is cool

Probably this is an effort to cut down the rental cost? However, I think it’s much better if they can provide everything although the cost will be a little bit higher.

i don’t think it’s right to call it an incubator (don’t even talk about super incubator) when entrepreneurs have to worry about doing up the place.

seriously, startups have enough to worry about, but don’t make us waste time setting up basic stuff like air-con, internet and other basic utilities. let us spend time on our core expertise, i.e. building kickass products

bottom-line, startups should pay for those ‘extras’, it’s only fair. but setting it up is the minimum incubators should provide.

Totally agree…and the rental is NOT affordable if you do your calculations. I don’t know which startup will sign up for this (unless you are financially backed with investors) but this is a very silly poorly thought out idea. And please lah you want us to decorate the whole building for you? “Lighting and finishing of walls”…sounds like the management is a real CHEAPO.

I enjoy reading about this kind of thing. This is completely new to me, but once I get my head around the many new terms, I find its illuminating things I’ve previously half-thought.
