[Keynote Presentation] Product Management – Start With Emerging Markets
The product management keynote started by looking at a working hypothesis: Web innovation is becoming globally decentralized.
The talk focuses on emerging markets as they provide the most opportunities for internet startups. The demographics are usually younger people who are the first web citizens in their family. Social is the killer app, it does not stop with Facebook. Newer products employ the social context and older products are being adapted to include it. Mobile will dominate as people do things on the move.
Things to tackle, payment systems. There is no uniform system and if a company plans to operate globally it will have to identify the suitable platform for its market. The choice of operating system should also be taken into account with SMS being a very common platform used in emerging markets, something that the established markets have overlooked.
Some trends to note, companies moving to emerging markets. Local venture capitalists playing a part in developing these emerging markets. All these will help define the internet startup scene in the near future.
An important questions, can Singapore be a Global Web hub? The verdict: No. Reasons:
- The talent pool in Singapore is too small
- Funding is too easy and focused on locals
- Startups need to start local and go global ( Singapore is too small!)
Some predictions:
- Emerging markets will begin exporting
- Follow the money, especially as users are crossing borders
- International partners may grow in importance
This talk definitely gives new perspective to local startups on how they should be operating and what market they will be able to succeed in. Singapore is a good place to startup, but running a business? Lets look global.
