Joi Ito to Speak at echelon 2010
Joichi Ito, or better known as Joi Ito, is confirmed to speak at echelon 2010. Joi will join the likes of Dave McClure, Chris Evdemon, Saeed Amidi, Jouko Ahvenainen and Tan Yinglan to discuss about mentorship, investment and new funding models for startups.
The Japanese activist, entrepreneur and venture capitalist is the CEO of Creative Commons, a non-profit corporation dedicated to making it easier for people to share and build upon the work of others, consistent with the rules of copyright. His prior achievements was heading PSINet Japan, the country’s first commercial ISP which was later sold to Cable and Wireless. Joi also co-founded Digital Garage, one of Japan’s first web companies, which is now a public company trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Joi has worked closely with government, academia and standards organizations to promote the internet and innovation.
Joi’s more recent venture is Neoteny labs, a venture fund and incubator that focuses on early-stage startup operating in Asia and the Middle East. Neoteny looks for startups in these regions that innovates in the field of consumer internet, mobile apps and consumer hardware & electronics design. The incubator was selected as one of the seven technology incubators to participate in the S$50 million National Research Foundation (NRF) Technology Innovation Scheme (TIS). Joi had this to comment on his interest in Southeast Asia’s Tech Hub:
“Singapore – with its multi-lingual, multi-cultural society and pro-talent and pro-business government policies – is perfectly positioned. We are firmly committed to building an ?Innovation Ecosystem? that will trigger a critical mass of investors and entrepreneurs focusing on Singapore as a leading entrepreneur hub in Asia. This will in turn spur the growth of technology commercialization in Singapore.”
