e27 Giveaway: Best Selling Business Book – Rework

by Joash Wee

ReworkRework is the new business book by 37signals’ founders Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson. This New York Times and Wall Street Journal Bestseller provides ideas that go against business norms on how startups should function, a 37signal trademark. The authors have been running this million dollar company where they implement these ideas. Rework challenges the rampant idea that you should work hard with its easy-is-better approach.

So why are we mentioning this awesome startup literature? Well, e27 happens to have an extra copy and we would like to share this with our readers. We will be giving this book to a lucky reader whose comments on how we can provide more value to the community through our blog is judged most valuable. Of course the judging will be done by us. Give us feedback on how we can improve the content or what other types of content would you like to see more on e27’s blog.

We would love to hear opinions from all of you. We look forward to hearing from you and keep following our updates @e27sg

Firstly I’d love to see a Crunchbase for Asia.

But for the blog more specifically I’d love to see a round up of local startup news, either in a weekly format or more ‘inline’ like the kottke or Daring Fireball approach of linking out to other content whilst commenting. I think a broader community view would be great rather than the ‘specific startup article every couple of days’ format that currently dominates.

More interviews (written) or perhaps on video but you desperately need a tripod or something and transcripts are a must. :-)

I nominate Andy as recipient of the book, seconding most of his comments barring the Crunchbase as that’s something that MDA seems to be working on (?).

Let me add one more to the pot: guest columns. Some of the startups here have managed to break out of the clutter. Get their CEO / Chairman to write something about their journey so far. We will all promise not to be scornful and say “S.O.B. is preening like a f**king peacock when he’s still got such a long way to go”. Scout’s honour.

@Andy: We’re working on it. We’re hoping to announce something kickass in a few months so look out for it ;)

@Varun: MDA’s system is in shambles. And do you really want a platform that caters only to iJam companies?

Here’s my thoughts on some ways e27 provide more value to the community through its blog.

    1. Host more start up events or events in partnerships with commercial or government entities to promote different initiatives for start up biz to promote themselves and tap on to for resources. It would also be nice if someone cover the actual event via twitter or follow-up blog post.

    2. Crunchbase. Definitely a must for start up to promote themselves. You can enhance it further by doing a weekly video to intro the company and its business. Best if you have an anchor host here.

    3. Video/Podcast interview with entrepreneurs to share their experience, this has to cover local context which is more relevant to start ups.

    Hope this helps.

No need to give the book to me since I already have it.

Why don’t you start a guest post program, where various members of the community who probably don’t have a blog write some guest posts on whatever topic they are passionate about. you get great content, readers get fresh content, the guests get exposure for themselves and their companies, everybody wins.

I personally think there should be something very local as well – go to universities and get students to talk about any idea they are working on and they think would make some difference. Talking about startups is a great ting to do but to get students who want to make a difference share their thoughts/ideas would make a huge difference, plus it brings better and crazy ideas to think about and work on for many people.

I guess blogs rely too much on mainstream – every startup will get a chance to get coverage at one blog or the other, but what about those who aspire to have one and are just holding up because they find it hard to share their thoughts?

Wow, that’s the book that I intent to buy since while a go.. =)

Could you let me buy it in discount instead, hehehe……

What of my idea is, why don’t you also provide like a investor information, and listing if any company out there have any startup friendly service.

This way, e27 can really boost startup and entrepreneurship here. =)
