OpenWeb.Asia Workgroup

OpenWeb.Asia

I stumbled upon this site the other day. This workgroup is a network of blogs that are focusing on the Asia Web industry. It’s sort of like a gateway between the Asian web scene and the global industry. As of now, the blogs that are on the workgroup come from countries like China, Korea, Japan, India, Vietnam, Singapore and Hong Kong; with Malaysia and Taiwan to be included in the future.

Our very own e27 blog is listed on the workgroup as well! There are other Asian weblogs of note as well, including:

MobiNode

DigitalWatch

Asiajin

VietnameseWeb2.0

Pluggd.in

Web2Asia

So, what do people normally know about the Asian Web scene? Well, for starters, Baidu.com is generally recognized as the premier search engine from China. In Japan, we have Mixi, the largest social network in the country. In Korea we have Naver, the country’s most popular search portal. However, since the mainstream language used over the internet is English, many of these sites are only utilised by users who are proficient in the languages. Believe me, it certainly is difficult trying to read Chinese Characters on the web, especially when you get so used to reading in English all the time. Due to this language barrier, many people throughout the world will miss the interesting stories and connections that have been made by these sites.

What a waste! Asia has so much to offer to the world in terms of the web experience. Asia needs to open up. Asia needs more stages where the local web industries can represent themselves. Asia needs more channels that can help local market in each country and region communicate and cooperate. Thus, with this in mind was the OpenWeb.Asia workgroup born.

The workgroup will participate actively in global industry events, vigorously promoting the Asian web industry to the entire world. By working closely with the global web industry, the workgroup hopes to bring the latest technologies for adaptation to the Asian market, and at the same time bringing Asian-developed technologies to the attention of the entire world.

The first big thing coming out of this workgroup is the organizing of the first ever pan-asia web 2.0 conference. Expectations are running high that local and global market leaders, startups and venture capitalists will be taking part in this event. Lets keep out fingers crossed that this event will be a barnstorming success, the first step in opening up Asia’s web scene to the world.

Update 4th June:
