Busy Bloggies at BlogOut!

For the party people in Singapore, we have ZoukOut. For the Blogging people in Singapore, we have BlogOut!

I was down at Blog Out earlier this evening. Geek Terminal is a really nice place and it’s definitely a fitting location for Blog Out.

I shall leave SgEntrepreneurs to provide you with a synopsis of the event as BL was liveblogging from the event.

Personally, I thought it was a great event that brought together people from the social media scene. Even the traditional-media people came to cover the event so I think more reports of the event should be available in the papers soon.

Good to see some personality bloggers and celebs over there too. Of course, nobody stood out more than Kevin Lim with his super “sousveillance” backpack streaming the event life. (See his setup)

Alas Singapore has a Justin.tv! We’ve beat out the rest of the world at replicating Justin.tv. But I think Kevin is definitely original in his own way. Tremendously heartening to see people like Kevin pushing the frontiers of social technology.

Haha, btw, earlier this week, I set up my own streaming channel. I’ve aptly named it JustinLee.tv, but I wonder if I could even command an audience at all? Would you like to see me stream a show?

What if I passed the backpack to you for a day? Would you be willing to broadcast your life online? :)

It’ll be great to involve the traditional media people into this event as well. Kee Haur, an ex-Mediacorp CH8 journalist was there, and when I spoke with him, he was pleasantly surprised by the vibrancy and turnout of this event.

The downside of such events is that we keep bumping into the same people all the time, although there is the kampung intimate feel to it. The key will be to hold it on a regular basis, have engaging topics, keep it informal and fun, focus not just on technology but the social aspects as well.

Such events could focus on how has technology helped to free the voice of the people, create strong grassroot movements like this, the implications for society etc. After all, technology itself does not exist in a vacuum but has to make a positive and significant impact on people’s lives.
